What is a good research topic for an Extended Essay about Noli Me Tangere by Jose Rizal?

I'm doing an Extended Essay about the book Noli Me Tangere by Jose Rizal, only I don't know what to write about it. I haven't read the book but I know it's about the Spanish government's corruption in colonial Philippines. I just need a research topic or question about it like symbolism or history, etc.(not too broad and not too narrow)

What is a good research topic for an Extended Essay about Noli Me Tangere by Jose Rizal?
The book exposes and ridicules the evils of imperialism. I would recommend any one of three approaches to such a paper:

1) How the imperialists (in this case, the Spanish) use religion (Father Damasco and the Roman Catholic Church) and how the religionists use the imperial power. You can use minor characters and digressions as well as the main plot to show how this affects the Filipino people.

2) The significance of the title: "The literal translation of the title is touch me not. Rizal derived this phrase from the Bible, specifically the Gospel of St. John 20:13-17, which describes how lepers were made to wear signs bearing these words to warn passers-by of their condition. "Touch me not" were also the warning words spoken by Jesus to Mary Magdalene upon rising from the dead. . . . French writer D. Blumentritt says that "Noli me tangere" is in fact the professional nickname used by ophthalmologists (such as Rizal himself) for cancer of the eyelids." (Wikipedia) Who are the "untouchables" in the book -- literally and symbolically?

3) Why the book is still so popular today and how it speaks to 21st century problems; for example, how USAmerican imperialism through military bases and the invasion/occupation of countries such as Iraq degrades and takes advantage of the local people and/or how both the Arabs and USAmerican politicians attempt to use religion and, in turn, are used by the religionists.

Good luck -- with a fascinating novel. Follow the four main charactes carefully: Ibarra, Father Damasco, Maria Clara, and Elias. But also make a catalog of digressions and minor incidents and note how they are used to characterize the Filipino people, their degradation on the one hand and their innate wholesome nature on the other.
