What are some controversial issues relevant to PORTRAITURE that could be a great research paper question/topic
What are they trying to say about themselves. Look at the setting, what props are surrounding them (books, flags...), what pose are they in (seated, standing, arms akimbo...), are they in in profile, full on or three quarter, are they looking at the viewer or off into the distance. All these issues combine to form a statement about the person depicted. Nothing in art is done by accident. Also, consider looking through some historical portraits to find precedence, but be sure to be able to explain why these similarities could be significant (this is a person they may have admired...) but don't come up with some far fetched connection, teachers can smell b.s. a mile away.
