What are some good research topics?

I have to do a report for my English class i'm taking over at the college... I have some ideas, but i'm hoping maybe you all know some better ones. I want to do something I will have fun doing, as there aren't really any restrictions to what I can write about.

What are some good research topics?
Why are American people so obsessed with wealth and fame? It use to be that people use to have some sincere interest (it seems to me) in helping others and nature was important. Having good and sincere relations with others and whatever field one was working in - just being able to feel good that at the end of the day one has done the best they can do - was more the fashion. Now, people are more likely uninterested in helping others, cheating and lying are rampant and being a rich celebrity is seen by many as being the ultimate sucess. Why would people see being rich and famous and the ultimate achievement - why is that the American Dream now?

Is individualism to blame - has the idea of "being yourself" and uniqueness gotten so out of hand that there is now no common ground or reason to respect the person next door?

Does the ideal of individualism in the US relate to the ideal of rich famousness and if so how? Is there a decline of respect for other people and does that relate to celebrities and if so how.
Reply:One major hint:

Dont right about something that is too based on personal beliefs or faith. Its hard to back those with facts.

Avoid questions about abortion (right or wrong) and ethical questions (unless that is the specific assignment).

When you have a topic, ask yourself "can this be answered as 'yes' or 'no'?" If so, scrap it or change it. Yes or no questions are not good for research at all.
